“The witches sought to mock us by holding their own communion supper in the pasture outside our holy parsonage.”

Ann gasped.

“I was there, and I saw it, too!” Lizzie said, her eyes huge. “Forty witches or more, and they were having a ceremony. And instead of bread, they had red meat, and instead of wine, they drank blood!”

Hannah gaped. “Did the Reverend see them?”

Abigail’s pale eyes went cold, like goat’s eyes. “Of course not. He’s not one of the afflicted. How could he see that? This is why we need to speak up. It’s our solemn duty to name the witches.”

Abigail wanted to accuse forty people of witchcraft? Hannah swallowed hard.

“Could you recognize any of them?” Mercy asked.

“I saw Elizabeth Proctor serving the supper.”

Elizabeth Proctor, again?

“Others were wearing cloaks with hoods. But guess who the wizard in charge of everything was?”

“Who?” Hannah said.

“Reverend George Burroughs!”

“Reverend—but he used to be a village minister,” Hannah cried, shocked.

Ann began nervously plucking at the grass. “His spirit came to me last night. He confessed that he murdered his first two wives.” Her gaze met Hannah’s.

The story sounded so stupid that Hannah snorted out loud.

Ann drew back, clearly wounded. “Are you laughing at me? I was so scared. He was sitting right at the end of my bed! Don’t you believe me?”

“No one would believe it, Ann! If he was a wizard, why would he tell you he killed his wives? He’d keep it a secret. It doesn’t make sense!”

Mercy’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “The village leaders trust us. Yet you seem to doubt our story. Do you think we’re lying?”

“I never said that, it’s just—”

Mercy sneered. “Here’s what you need to understand. The Lord is using us to reveal the witches.”

Hannah turned to Ann. “Are you honestly going to send forty villagers to jail? They’ll be hung, you know. Hung until they’re dead. These are people we’ve known all our lives.”

Tears dampened Ann’s lashes. “If you’re not with us, then it seems you are against us.” Her voice shook with emotion. “And why would that be so, when we are doing God’s will?”

Seeing Ann’s tears, Hannah backtracked. “I think you believe what you’re saying, but . . .”

“Because it is true!” Ann said. “Tomorrow, we are to stand before the village elders to help question the new witches we’ve identified. Hannah, please! You must show your support for us!” Ann’s eyes locked with hers, her expression earnest.

Hannah realized that her former friend was trying to help her.

Heart racing, she had no idea what to say.
